For an urban home on a compact site, Kanuka Residence by Hyndman Taylor Architects is turning out to be something of a high achiever. The home picked up not only the 2023 COLORSTEEL® Residential Building of the Year Award, but also an NZIA Western Architecture Award for Housing, as well as a 2023 Resene Colour Award.

This success is no surprise given its combination of angular lines, unique materials and precise detailing, with the COLORSTEEL TidalDrift® Matte roof in a Tray profile being a standout feature that gives the home its contemporary architectural form. Alongside large custom-printed porcelain tiles that carry through to the interior, the external treatment is a beautiful combination of organic and linear textures. The Tray profile folds down the faceted roofline creating three hips, which form the lofty interior ceiling heights and also create a sleek juxtaposition against the site’s surrounding established trees.

A 45mm roof cavity has been utilised on the project, with purline over plywood packers. The roof cavity vents into the wall cavity forming a 45mm drainage and ventilation cavity to the entire building envelope. The tray cladding has been crafted with a setout of modules to suit the wall length and window set out. Roof modules wrap down to meet wall modules, with drainage at the base of the wall in some instances. The hook seam to the top of the barge detail minimises flashing lines. The garage form provides dynamism at the entry, sailing over the projecting tiled forms of the guest bedrooms and garage perfectly.

“We specified COLORSTEEL TidalDrift® Matte, which has a really juicy, mid tone grey, which helped pull out that same colour tone in the tiles. The Matte product has a beautiful depth to it,” says architect Erin Hyndman, adding “what's nice about the project is the hip forms are experienced as volume and space from the inside.” Hyndman Taylor lifted the floorplate to develop sightlines across the neighbouring golf course, with high level skylights and a series of vertical wing windows injecting warmth and daylight into these spaces, while also allowing for optimal privacy.

In terms of the floor plan, provision is made for the homeowners to entertain extended family for holidays, as well as to encompass their everyday needs on a smaller scale when required. This includes two living spaces that flow through to the central kitchen, with timber wall linings and cabinetry lending a modern country lodge feel. For his part in the home’s success, roofer Hartmut Reichelt of Construction Connection & Consultancy Ltd was awarded COLORSTEEL® Tray Roofer of the Year. “Hartmut was just a perfect fit from the get-go,” says Erin. “The perfection he achieved on the project was beautiful, it's like a piece of joinery on the outside.”

Kanuka Residence was a clear standout to COLORSTEEL® Awards judge, architect Ken Crosson, who commented that the home is “a beautifully crafted space and a beautifully crafted, technically competent building as well. The quality of the workmanship sat really nicely against the quality of the architecture.”
