Plants such as the harakeke and wharariki - our two native flax varieties - can be seen growing all over the country, in all kinds of climates and soil, from the sides of Auckland’s motorways to the banks of the Southern Lakes. While the two varieties are slightly different, both have a distinctive flower that is well loved by the tui and bellbird. The flowers range from a dark red to a bright yellowish green, and often shoot up high above the spiked leaves. The show is not over after flowering, though, as flax seed pods are just as beautiful. A deep, rich black with a touch of red-brown in it, these pods are emblematic of the colours and tones of a true native New Zealand forest.

It may come as no surprise that New Zealanders also appreciate these tones when it comes to choosing colours for their homes. We are a people who don’t like to stand out too much, and coming from such a beautiful country, we appreciate a good view, unblemished by human intervention. Perhaps this is why FlaxPod®, now available in an understated Matte finish, is such a popular choice in the COLORSTEEL® range.

Having a matte finish means the material evenly diffuses light, delivering richness and depth of colour. This helps it to pair well with a range of natural and contemporary materials and finishes, as well as merging nicely with the landscape.

Weathering steel is especially effective alongside FlaxPod® Matte. Even a small amount can add a sense of warmth and rusticity. It can also provide a pop of natural colour when paired with this material. This weathered, rust coloured metal can be used to enhance a garage door, a section of wall or even the letterbox, and tends to bring out the warmth in FlaxPod® Matte.

Equally, concrete and stone add layers of grey to accentuate the refined, understated aesthetic provided by a matte finish. A base of schist or a bagged stone wall can lend a sturdy, rugged look that suggests a sense of timelessness. Unvarnished timber weatherboards give a sophisticated look when paired with a FlaxPod® clad roof. Weatherboards can also be used to break up a larger section of cladding, providing some variety in tone and texture. Or, for an all over effect, match roofing and cladding for a dramatic look, as seen in this Waihi project.

Just as flax bushes enhance any New Zealand landscape, FlaxPod® Matte is a flexible and versatile material that speaks our local architecture vernacular, quietly contributing a sense of understated elegance.
