Plants such as the harakeke and wharariki - our two native flax varieties - can be seen growing all over the country, in all kinds of climates and soil, from the sides of Auckland’s motorways to the banks of the Southern Lakes. While the two varieties are slightly different, both have a distinctive flower that is well loved by the tui and bellbird. The flowers range from a dark red to a bright yellowish green, and often shoot up high above the spiked leaves. The show is not over after flowering, though, as flax seed pods are just as beautiful. A deep, rich black with a touch of red-brown in it, these pods are emblematic of the colours and tones of a true native New Zealand forest.
