Renowned for its proven durability and performance, for over 40 years, COLORSTEEL® has been producing quality roofing solutions in New Zealand, for New Zealand. But driven by a desire to create better, stronger, and more beautiful every day, we are constantly building on our foundation of practical knowledge, experience and understanding to think differently and deliver intelligent solutions for real applications. We are excited to announce the Next Generation of COLORSTEEL® - COLORSTEEL MAXAM®, which brings together the outstanding quality and consistency COLORSTEEL® is known for, with game changing ACTIVATE™ technology, designed to deliver enhanced corrosion resistance.
COLORSTEEL MAXAM® is a new single product solution, replacing COLORSTEEL ENDURA® and MAXX®, suitable for most of New Zealand’s environmental conditions, providing exceptional durability and corrosion protection. From alpine regions to urban city centres, no guessing, no confusion, no wrong choices, just COLORSTEEL MAXAM®, with COLORSTEEL ALTIMATE® the best choice for New Zealand’s most severe environmental conditions.
As a simple description, currently COLORSTEEL® is made up of a steel substrate with an Aluminium Zinc (AZ) metallic alloy coating, before the paint system is applied. Patent protected ACTIVATE™ Technology introduces to COLORSTEEL® a new Aluminium, Zinc & Magnesium (AM) metallic coating. Unlike traditional AZ coatings, which offer robust protection, the addition of magnesium in the AM coating significantly assists in slowing down corrosion, extending the corrosion to perforation lifespan of COLORSTEEL®. ACTIVATE™ technology was specifically designed to deliver enhanced corrosion resistance.
Although AM metallic alloy coatings have been available internationally for a while, not all AM coatings are made the same way. The magic in our ACTIVATE™ technology is around the strategic positioning of the magnesium compounds at the top and bottom of the coating, to deliver enhanced corrosion resistance, enabling a sizeable step change in the warranties offered, now up to 50 years.

The COLORSTEEL® Sand to Summit Series introduces new colours inspired by New Zealand - from our sandy coastlines to the icy alpines. Inspired by our home; the beautiful, diverse, and ever-changing landscape of Aotearoa, New Zealand, we’re proud to introduce 4 new colours to our COLORSTEEL® Standard colour palette. These colours reflect the golden hues of our beaches, to the soft muted tones of our native forests, and crisp cool shades of our alpine ranges.
STONEPEAK™ MATTE
Inspired by the alpine peaks throughout our country’s
heart, this smooth, light grey is reminiscent of the
misty clouds that roll through our mountain ranges.
SANDSCAPE®
Inspired by the East Coast, a pale neutral grey that
pairs well with whites and light washed wood for a
coastal aesthetic.
SANDBAR™
Bringing the natural warmth of golden sand, this soft
neutral colour harmonises beautifully with stone finishes
and rich brown timbers, creating a cozy, natural sanctuary.
TUITUFT®
Crisp & clean, the whitest of whites, effortlessly
blending with greys and timbers to create bright
and airy spaces.

COLORSTEEL® is the perfect choice for use across all of New Zealand, with excellent seismic performance and credentials. In the wake of the Christchurch Earthquakes, one of the clear messages coming from experts was the strong recommendation to use lightweight metal roofing over heavy tiled options.
This refers to the Base Metal Thickness (BMT) of a product. The New Zealand Building Code requires materials used for profiled steel roof cladding to have a minimum BMT of 0.40mm. For a more dent-resistant finish or requirements suited to your specific location, you may opt or need a higher BMT of 0.55mm.
Yes! Re-roofing from tiles to long-run can be done without any issues. It is also an incredible way to refresh and modernise the look of your home with a large of colours and profiles to choose from. In most cases it can also be done without building consent. Reach out to your COLORSTEEL® supplier today.

New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) is a non-profit membership organisation that promotes better buildings, because better buildings mean healthier, happier people. NZGBC manage the Homestar and Green Star rating tools for NZ.
Homestar is an independent rating tool that certifies the health, efficiency and sustainability of New Zealand homes.
Green Star is a rating tool to support stakeholders in the property and construction sectors to design, construct and operate projects in a more sustainable, efficient and productive way. It provides tenants with a trusted mark of independent verification to support decision-making. Green Star is for commercial building projects.
There are two versions of Green Star currently applicable in New Zealand:
The rating tools are organised into Categories, addressing key themes of sustainable building. Within each category, are Credits that address specific areas within that category. Each Credit has a specified number of Points available, providing the Credit Criteria are met.
How many points are available under Green Star and Homestar?
MAT-1 is the name of the Sustainable Materials credit under the Homestar v4 rating tool. MAT-8 is the name of the Steel Credit under the Green Star v3 rating tool. Credit 21 is the number of the Sustainable Products credit under the Green Star Design and As Built NZv1.0 rating tool.
In New Zealand, Environmental Choice is the official environmental label. More than listing environmentally friendly products for green homes or businesses, the ECNZ ecolabel offers strong proof of environmental performance.
ISO 14001 is a standard that defines criteria for an EMS. It does not state requirements for environmental performance but rather maps out a framework that a company or organization can follow to set up an effective EMS. It can be used by any organization that wants to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste, and reduce costs. Using ISO 14001 can provide assurance to company management, employees and external stakeholders, that the organisation’s environmental impact is being measured and improved.
An EPD, Environmental Product Declaration, is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products.
Declare is an ecolabel that answers 3 questions – where does a product come from? What is it made of? And Where does it go at the end of its life. It is a transparency platform and product database.
The materials red list (commonly shortened to simply “red list”) is a compilation of harmful-to-human chemicals and materials compiled by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) as part of its Living Building Challenge.
World Steel Association, often abbreviated as worldsteel, is the international trade body for the iron and steel industry. The association is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world, with members in every major steel-producing country. Worldsteel represents steel producers, national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes. Members represent around 85% of global steel production.
The worldsteel Climate Action Recognition Programme recognises steel producers that have fulfilled their commitment to participate in the worldsteel CO2 emissions data collection programme.
In 2008, Climate Action was launched, under which companies report data on site, or at company level, for CO2 emissions. A participating company or site receives a report showing the process route average emission data and range to which it can compare itself. The data collection programme is at the core of the steel industry's global steel sectoral approach to climate change. Based on a common methodology, definitions and agreed boundaries, the data collection programme enables individual steel plants to compare themselves against both average and best performance and identify its scope for improvement.
Participation is open to all steel-producing sites or companies, worldsteel members and non-members alike.
